RESUMO

Implementation of a systematic program for galactic cosmic radiation (GCR) countermeasure discovery will require convenient access to ground-based space radiation analogs. The current gold standard approach for GCR simulation is to use a particle accelerator for sequential irradiation with ion beams representing different GCR components. This has limitations, particularly for studies of non-acute responses, strategies that require robotic instrumentation, or implementation of complex in vitro models that are emerging as alternatives to animal experimentation. Here we explore theoretical and practical issues relating to a different approach to provide a high-LET radiation field for space radiation countermeasure discovery, based on use of compact portable sources to generate neutron-induced charged particles. We present modeling studies showing that DD and DT neutron generators, as well as an AmBe radionuclide-based source, generate charged particles with a linear energy transfer (LET) distribution that, within a range of biological interest extending from about 10 to 200 keV/µm, resembles the LET distribution of reference GCR radiation fields experienced in a spacecraft or on the lunar surface. We also demonstrate the feasibility of using DD neutrons to induce 53BP1 DNA double-strand break repair foci in the HBEC3-KT line of human bronchial epithelial cells, which are widely used for studies of lung carcinogenesis. The neutron-induced foci are larger and more persistent than X ray-induced foci, consistent with the induction of complex, difficult-to-repair DNA damage characteristic of exposure to high-LET (>10 keV/µm) radiation. We discuss limitations of the neutron approach, including low fluence in the low LET range (<10 keV/µm) and the absence of certain long-range features of high charge and energy particle tracks. We present a concept for integration of a compact portable source with a multiplex microfluidic in vitro culture system, and we discuss a pathway for further validation of the use of compact portable sources for countermeasure discovery.

Air samples were taken at various locations around The University of Texas at Austin's TRIGA Mark II research reactor and analyzed to determine the concentrations of 37Ar, 41Ar, and 133Xe present. The measured ratio of 37Ar/41Ar and historical records of 41Ar releases were then utilized to estimate an annual average release rate of 37Ar from the reactor facility. Using the calculated release rate, atmospheric transport modeling was performed in order to determine the potential impact of research reactor operations on nearby treaty verification activities. Results suggest that small research reactors (∼1 MWt) do not release 37Ar in concentrations measurable by currently proposed OSI detection equipment.

Radioargon isotopes, particularly (37)Ar, are currently being considered for use as an On-Site Inspection (OSI) relevant radionuclide within the context of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT). In order to understand any soil air measurements taken during an OSI, the radioargon background due to cosmic ray induced activation along with other sources must be understood. An MCNP6 model was developed using the cosmic ray source feature within the code to examine the neutron flux at ground level as a function of various conditions: date during the solar magnetic activity cycle, latitude of sampling location, geology of the sampling location, and sampling depth. Once the cosmic neutron flux was obtained, calculations were performed to determine the rate of radioargon production for the main interactions. Radioargon production was shown to be highly dependent on the soil composition, and a range of (37)Ar production values at 1 m depth was found with a maximum production rate of 4.012 atoms/sec/m(3) in carbonate geologies and a minimum production rate of 0.070 atoms/sec/m(3) in low calcium granite. The sampling location latitude was also shown to have a measurable effect on the radioargon production rate, where the production of (37)Ar in an average continental crust is shown to vary by a factor of two between the equator and the poles. The sampling date's position within the solar magnetic activity cycle was also shown to cause a smaller change, less than a factor of 1.2, in activation between solar maxima and solar minima.

High-volume air samplers were used to collect aerosol samples on Whatman 41 air filters at the Canadian air sampling stations Burnt Island, Egbert, and Point Petre. The samples were analyzed for trace elements by neutron activation analysis. Air concentrations of over 30 trace elements were determined. Factor analysis, elemental ratios, and enrichment factor analysis were used to determine source-receptor relationships at the three different sites. Factor analysis exhibited trends that indicate oil and coal combustion, road salt, mining, incineration, and smelting as anthropogenic sources to aerosols of the rural Great Lakes. Elemental ratios showed that the Na to Cl ratio in the Great Lakes aerosol is similar to that found in sea water. Enrichment factor analysis revealed elements with non-crustal sources including the elements Ag, As, Br, Cl, Cu, I, In, Sb, Se, Sn, W, and Zn.
